Open Source Software
SSi is a big proponent of open source software, and most specifically, open source UNIX operating systems. Since the mid-1990's we have built all of our server-based solutions on open source platforms. We rely on it for many of our critical network services, including:
- Mail, Incoming and Outgoing (POP3, SMTP, IMAP)
- User Authentication & Tracking
- Web & DNS Services
- Transparent Web Caching
- FTP, File Sharing
Our operating system of choice is FreeBSD, though we use other open source platforms for certain niche applications. FreeBSD has proven itself as a rock solid platform for all of our server requirements. Our servers rarely crash. They do not need to be reset. Uptime is often measured in years, and when the servers do come down, it is typically due to a software or hardware upgrade, or other transitory factor.
Open source UNIX operating systems provide a great number of benefits, including:
- Reliability is excellent, reducing maintenance and upkeep costs
- Hardware requirements tend to be lower than commercial software
- Features and functionality tend to exceed that of commercial software
- Open source software tends to adhere more closely to established standards
- Remote maintenance is very simple to perform (SSH and a command line)
- Vendor lock-in is non-existent
- Support, via user groups, is generally better than commercial support
- Source code is readily available, allowing us to customize as required
- It tends to be more secure than other platforms
- It's free!
Open source software has enabled our organization to provide a higher level of service than would otherwise be possible. It has allowed us to worry less about "keeping the servers running" and more about "what new products can we launch?" We owe a great debt to the open source community. Thank you!
